Online Movement Disorders Course: Training the Neurologists of Tomorrow

Introduction
This is a program intended to enhance Movement Disorders (MD) training for General Neurologists, Psychiatrists, Physiatrists (PM&R), and Primary Care Providers to improve their skills in Movement Disorders. This program will use blended learning, and the most modern teaching methodology including online lectures, reading assignments, tasks, quizzes and formative assessments. The course will be delivered in the form of a small group to create a community of learning.

Participants will complete a module every other week for 12 modules in movement disorders. Those successfully completing the course will earn a certificate from University of Nebraska Medical Center. But the real prize of the course is your own professional development. Neurology will never be the same again. We are looking to change the face of Neurology.

Program Difficulty
This course has been designed to challenge you from beginning to end. You are expected to perform at a minimum level to stay in the course and have performance within one Standard Deviation of the group average to graduate from the course. Many candidates don’t comprehend the time commitment they will need to give during the course. You will need to commit a minimum of 30-45 minutes daily on assignments during the week and weekends.

Target Audience
The course is intended for General Neurologists, Psychiatrist, Physiatrists (PM&R), and Internists who have complete training in their primary filed and are practicing physicians and academicians. The course will provide tools and training needed to provide basic education in Movement Disorders to their residents and trainees, to selected participants who are in academics and run teaching and training programs.

Goals
To impart knowledge and skills that will be helpful in diagnosing and treating patients with movement disorders.

To fill in the gap in sub-specialty education where it exists internationally. 

As an optional part of your professional development as a Neurologist, this course promises to be useful and effective in allowing you to develop special skills. These skills will be helpful in diagnosing and treating movement disorders.

Application Process

Once application opens you will be invited to submit your CV (resume), Medical School degree and a support letter from a faculty member/program director along with a statement of purpose: Please tell us in about 150 words why you should be selected and what will you do with the skills that you may acquire through the course. You can submit ANY and ALL supporting documents that you believe will help us make a decision through email. Submissions is Online only, remember this is blended learning.

Participant Selection
The Course Committee will use criteria of merit and inclusively (across different programs and countries) to decide who are the candidates most likely to benefit from the course and enhance MD practice in their region. We consider our participants ambassadors of Movement Disorders Division of UNMC.

Participant number
We are looking for ambassadors we can be proud of. Over the last years we selected 12-20 participants with 90% overall successful completion rate. This year we are limiting our cohort to 12 but may re-visit this number.

Application Deadline
You can fill out a Registration form at any time of the year. Kindly fill out the form if you are interested in being invited for the next years batch for consideration. We will start reaching out to potential candidates on April 1 of each year by reviewing the applicants registered, and invite applications (next batch will be April 1, 2021). Final selection of candidates will be by May 15 of each year (next one is May 15, 2021). Please register at any time to notify us of your interest. A full application and required documents will be requested closer to the 2020 start date. The course formally starts June 1 of each year.

Participant Selection
Current cohort of 12 candidates completed the course on December 31, 2020. Full applications will be invited after April 1, 2021. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2021. The next cohort will start May 15, 2021. Selected participants will be notified prior to May 15, 2021. 

Program Methodology
This is an innovative and pioneering work in teaching methodology. Blended learning means a blend of self-directed learning, online interaction, formative feedback and face to face skills development. Participants will have online education and interactive guidance with feedback every week, required tasks and assignments to be submitted online, providing them complete freedom on when to do them, where to do them and how to do them. This 6 months long online guided interactive education may be followed by a Visiting Scholars Program at UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences at participant’s choice with additional fees for that program.
